Riding with Farida today on a moderate initial training ride. We'll focus on mild to moderate back country roads with little traffic possibly interspersed with some parking lot work. There will be frequent stops. Depending on how things are going we might make it as far as Gambrills Park Road which is one of my favorite in the area.
I thought I had it out of my system, but I do not, so I've decided to coach a new rider, one of Yun's friends. The weather is nice today and I haven't been on a bike in 3 months so I'll take a few hours out and spend it away from the computer. I've made plenty of progress so I can probably afford a short break.
After some discussion, we decided to re-trace part of the route Duncan and I did with Jim Ford some years ago and follow that with a run out to Savage River Road and the general area out in the pan handle. If we're able to get out at a decent hour this should be a right proper riding day.
We had hoped this would be a multi-day ride but circumstances have conspired to turn it into a day ride. Thinking of not venturing out too far.
First properly cool day in ages. We have no particular plan. The thought is to stop by Bob's BMW and buy some parts and then head somewhere. Not sure where. Maybe McGinty's for dinner ... well, probably McGinty's for dinner.
I've been invited to dinner North of Philadelphia. My thought is that we could ride North and East-ish.
Something a little different. My buddy Mike has built an off-road 4x4 and we have talked for ages about going on some of the roads I've come across out West in the George Washington National Forest. So the plan is to take him over at least two gravel passes and on some trails.
Last week we got rained out and opted to ride the Delmarva Peninsula. My thought is to go explore a few roads in a blank spot on the map just North West of Front Royal and just go exploring from there. It's supposed to be warm but the chance of rain is low.
The weather is turning sour in all points West. If we go that way we'll very likely get wet based on Wunderground forecasts. Looking around there's one area we've never ridden to before. It's just super boring long and flat but we have not done a loop out to Ocean City. My thought, as reflected on the plan, is to head across the bridge to Ocean city and then loop up and over through Chesapeake city. It'd be a right proper 340+ mile ride but consisting mostly of slab.
Heading out. Don't really know where we'll end up.
It's super hot outside, the car thermometer read 98. We're planning on heading out on another late afternoon/early evening ride to roughly the same area as yesterday to see what other roads we can find. And I'm sure, as is customary, I will find my way to McGinty's afterwards. I've added the tracks from yesterday's ride and the ride we did with Garrett to the plan just for easy reference.
Complications got in the way of riding today so we're getting a wicked late start. There are popup thunderstorms to the South and East and the sky overhead is turning dark, but I suspect we'll try anyway. McGinty's Probably later.
I'm heading up to Philadelphia for the weekend to attend a BBQ later today and to take a friend on her first motorcycle ride tomorrow. There's no much of a plan. I'll probably just superslab it up.
Due to distractions with boats, it's been way too long since we've gotten out on the bikes. A short evening ride is better than no ride at all ...
Jackie and I will be spending Friday and Saturday night at the Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia. Friday and Monday riding will include our commutes from and back to home. Saturday we'll ride some of the scenic roads in the area and visit some of the best new roads we've recently mapped. Sunday we will cross through new territory in West Virginia to Wise, Virginia where we'll spend Sunday night at the Wise Inn.
I'm spending the week mapping south of Snowshoe, WV to Tazwell, VA centered on Beckley. Cell service will be rare so I'll mostly post from the bar in the evenings. I'm exploring and rating the roads for two new maps of the area.
Looking ahead with the idea of maybe getting more people involved, I'm pondering a street bike ride on Saturday. The weather looks like it's going to be good. I have a dinner commitment in the evening around 7 near route 70 and 32. I'll put some ideas on the map for discussion.
A new rider is planning on joining us on a ride up to the gravel roads of Michaux State Forest. The plan is to meet at the Sheetz in Frederick at 11AM on Saturday (best laid plans of mice and men) and then head up to the Southernmost entrance to Michaux. I'll work on the ride plan over the next day or so.
The weather is good. I slept horribly and am too tired to turn wrenches so the thought is to go explore a local blank section on the map through Little Bennett Regional Park and skinny roads North and East of there. This is planned to be a street ride.
Buffalo, Bruce, and I are planning on a 10 day or so ride through New Mexico and surrounding areas sometime this coming Spring or early Summer. Riding the "Alien Loop" has been mentioned. As of this writing it's still up in the air but the general idea is that I would trailer the two K bikes out to meet up with Bruce. Buffalo would fly in. We would ride for 10, maybe 14 days, Buffalo would fly back and then I would trailer the bikes back. I may take an extra week and ride further West. It's still not set in stone. This would be a street ride on street bikes. The listed dates are just placeholders until we get closer and know what everyone's schedule is.
Riding and judging roads in VA and WV
The plan is to meet at my house at 11 and take the dual sports up to the Frederick Municipal Watershed and points further north to Michaux State Forest and ride some gravel roads.
