Crossing back into Argentina
we have stopped for lunch in Rio grande. another spot in the middle of nowhere. just a gas station really. it is full of bikes from around the world and bikers everybody making their way either two or from ushuaya. we're starting to get to know a few people on the road and meet them along the way. it's still wet. it's still cold. it's still desolate but on we go.

I am up early this morning. not by choice, but when the person above you wakes up in these old hotels and starts clamping around, it's time to get up. it's a little warmer today, with light rain, the wind has died down to about 15 knots, and the frogs are singing outside. The start of another day.

My room was large and warm. it had three beds, and a big bathroom with a jacuzzi, though the shower was enough for me. I suppose it's more set up for families. The hotel is old and creeks a bit but it's clean and serviceable. breakfast starts at 7:00 this morning and then will be on the bikes by 8:00 8:30ish. I'll ride today. continues south and we will reach ushuaya the final and farthest point on our journey. we will go a little further south on some rides out of there but there's not much further south to go without getting on a boat and heading to Antarctica.

I'm hoping today is warmer but we are told it will just get colder and colder as we continue south. I've got on all my layers and was going to wear my rain jacket anyway today just to block more wind and try to stay warmer. it's right on the edge of tolerable now. so long as you take a break every hour and a half or so to get in somewhere and warm up. this is much colder than I ever expected it would be.
Tonight finds us in Cerro Sombrero. it's the middle of nowhere, but there is a whole lot of nowhere here in both Argentina and Chile. The countryside is vast, empty, and pretty monotonous. we rode a little more than 580 km today, about 200 of that on dirt roads. it's been a very long day.

after touring Torres del pain park, we headed south on the highways, which are basically two lane roads of concrete and fairly decent condition. it was long hours through empty country with strong blowing winds and little else. occasionally we would see sheep, and sometimes the wild llamas which are actually known as guanacos. they are kind of like deer in the US, they hang out along the highways though. though I haven't seen many run over so they are probably smarter. we also saw a lot of the ostrich looking birds along the road which are surprisingly well camouflaged until you're right on top of them.

The highlights this afternoon were reaching the straits of Magellan and the shoreline were repaused for a brief stop at an old sheep processing area. we proceeded further south and boarded a ferry in porta natales. it was a 20 minute ride across. then we headed south as darkness fell arriving at our hotel with with the lights on. we quickly checked in then ran to the restaurant for dinner before it closed. it is the kind of place where there is no menu. what they have is what you eat and tonight it was pretty good steaks and other side dishes. it's late and tomorrow we head out around 8:30 to continue south to oushwaya back in Argentina. I hope the border crossing goes well.
