Latest update is that they will resume their journey South tomorrow and should arrive here Monday or Tuesday.

My living room is starting to look like the prep area for a major expedition.

Heaving to What is it and why should know how to do it?

Heaving to (heave to / hove to) involves parking the boat while out at sea. It's easy to do but it takes a little practice as every boat is different!

Mostly I've been focused on "what to do when things go wrong" topics. Man overboard when I'm at the helm is obviously something I'm going to need to know how to do.

I had talked to Dana about this and hope we'll have a chance to practice it a few times.

The chartplotter on the boat has a man overboard button that you hit as soon as you see someone overboard. It marks the spot so you can navigate back to it.

One thing about this tutorial video that struck me is how hard it is to see the man overboard even under almost ideal conditions. If seas were heavy, this could get ugly very quickly.

They managed to find a safe anchorage behind a sea wall where they are now waiting out the remnants of that crazy nor'easter. I heard from Dana. It was a bumpy night but all is well aside from too little sleep.

Because of the storm my departure date is pushed back a bit but I don't yet know by how much.

Preparations on my end continue.

I went down to West Marine and asked for some help in picking out foul weather gear. When I mentioned the adventure I was going on there was suddenly an air of seriousness. It took a few hours but I think I have almost everything I need.

I opted instead of getting a Personal Locator Beacon to get a beacon that is compatible with AIS so if I go overboard my location will, presumably, show up on the boats chartplotter. Since there will be multiple people on the boat and the boat has an EPIRB, I thought that would be the better option. I'm not sure if that was the correct choice.

I also picked up a Garmin InReach so I can stay in touch with people.
