If all goes to plan, Duncan, Bruce, and I will go on a two and half day or so ride through some of the more northern roads I've explored in Virginia with America Rides Maps. This is a street ride. I promise! ;)
A group ride for Washington DC metropolitan area riders of BMW K1200S and K1300S and friends.
We're going to be guiding a few jeeps through th e gravel roads of Michaux State Forest in PA. We'll be meeting at the social center of Thurmont also known as the Sheetz off of 15 and 550, which is marked on the map. The Sheetz is at 428 North Church Street, Thurmont, Md 21788
I'm going to head down to Waynesville for 5 days to help map and explore the plethora of fire service and other legal unpaved roads in the area. Unfortunately, because of time constraints, I'm going to have to travel the entire distance in a single day both on the trip down and the trip back. It's a tall exhausting order on a DR650. 637 miles on twisty back roads in a single day ...
We'll be taking all three DR's up to Michaux for the first time tomorrow. My thought is to bypass the watershed because of the dead ends and just head to our traditional entry point at the Southernmost end on Rattlesnake Run Road. The plan is to meet over at 11 and then slab it up to the traditional Sheetz, probably by 12:15 or so and then on to gravel. We'll be retracing the route up we took to the IMS show.
Assuming I can get both the R1100S Guest Bike and my DR650SE operational before Saturday, we're planning on a hopefully longish day ride. Sadly, a multi-day overnight was not in the cards for this Bruce visit.
I've decided to risk riding the DR despite the worn chain. We're just going to go on a few hour short little local ride before my meeting at 4.
We're going to attempt a bit of a longer ride today.
The weather is nice. Time for a short late afternoon ride.
I'm not sure where we'll head but the weather is gorgeous and it's time for a ride.
The plan is to head to Southern Maryland to check out that road Mike showed me and maybe a few more.
Sadly, the oil filler cap on the R1100S has failed again, so I have to pull the valve cover. As a result, I changed the oil and filter on the DR650SE and adjusted the chain. I'll do valves and plugs at a later date. There's really not much of a plan for this ride. I figure we'll just tool around where the mood takes us.
Thinking of using what could be one of the last good riding weekends of 2020 to explore how many times I can cross the Potomac above great falls without getting totally lost. This would be my first foray into creating a ride plan on Miles by Motorcycle, so hoping to get some suggestions and feedback from other riders.
Duncan and I are talking about riding tomorrow (Monday the 19th) but are not yet sure where we're going to go. Maybe do a loop through Southern Maryland and look at one of our favorite tree tunnel roads, Route 224? Not sure.
I'm not sure where we'll go but we're getting out on the bikes for a few hours.
Years ago, I bought parts K100RS from Craig. He recently reached out on messenger saying he had picked up a K1300S and was interested in being shown some good local roads. I thought maybe we could show Craig and Tim some of our go to local roads maybe doing a loop up through parts of the Power of Left and then to points North looping up towards Catoctin. My only constraint is that I am having some electrical work done on Saturday so will have to wait for that to be completed. I'll post updates here as it gets close to completed. So consider the two o'clock departure time a rough guess. I figure we can all meet at Duncan's house. Seeing three K1300's following an R1100S should be a noteworthy sight.
The sky is cloud covered but there is little in the way of rain in the forecast.
Not really sure at this point where we should go. I suppose it'll depend on how well we are both doing tomorrow. Lately, it's been a toss up. Maybe back to the Indian Springs Road area we rode with Bruce?
While it's not the 10 day ride we would prefer, Duncan, Bruce, and I are going to ride together for the first time in a very long time. I'm pondering super slab up to Falls Road North of Baltimore, one of our favorites, and then loop over random roads to Catoctin ... dinner at McGinthy's at 8.
So my buddy destroyed his leg a few months ago in a tragic scooter accident. (Cue Spinal Tap Drummer memorial.) He's recovered enough to attempt a modest first ride since the injury. There isn't much of a plan other than to see if he can manage to shift and hold the bike upright.
After some discussion, we decided to re-trace part of the route Duncan and I did with Jim Ford some years ago and follow that with a run out to Savage River Road and the general area out in the pan handle. If we're able to get out at a decent hour this should be a right proper riding day.
We had hoped this would be a multi-day ride but circumstances have conspired to turn it into a day ride. Thinking of not venturing out too far.
A new rider is planning on joining us on a ride up to the gravel roads of Michaux State Forest. The plan is to meet at the Sheetz in Frederick at 11AM on Saturday (best laid plans of mice and men) and then head up to the Southernmost entrance to Michaux. I'll work on the ride plan over the next day or so.
