Gonna have to see how third party bolt on support is for this vs. the comparable G650GS Sertao.
It would need at least a lower engine plate guard, chain and sprocket guards, bags and a better seat along with hand guards.

I bought my Ninja from Motorcycle Factory, as much as I love the bike I don't thionk I would buy another from them. They would be fine to use as a showroom, but I'd go elsewhere for the purchase.
It's probably still worth heading down there to take a look, even if you don't plan on buying from them (Rob: thanks for the warning). I think they carry KTM as well, which could be another TAT contender.
This month's SportRider mag has a review of the new Huskys, not as favorable as I expected. I *hate* to say this, but, the GS650 Sertao is looking awfully good.

Milner pointed out that Mortons has a 2012 Sertao in stock with 4K miles on it. I'm thinking of taking a look. Maybe they'll let me test ride the thing.

That looks very cool. Too bad they're not available here (and are carburated to the best of my knowledge).
If I'm not mistaken, that was sold also as a "Transalp", and might have even had some limited availability here for a brief period of time. As Yermo suggests, it is not fuel injected.

Are you thinking of using hard luggage or soft luggage? Certainly opens up more possibilities if you plan on soft luggage.

I was going to suggest that you take a closer look at the KTMs, but I figured, what's the point?!I'm thinking hard luggage so I can lock it. Soft luggage would be lighter but I've never enjoyed using it, having been spoiled now for many years with the BMW bags.
I've looked at a number of bikes. I'm really thinking the G650GS Sertao is probably the best compromise for this trip.

Hard luggage is vastly superior in almost all respects, but with soft luggage you wouldn't have to worry about breaking it if the bike ended up on the ground. Hopefully the adventure-style luggage will stand up to any abuse it might experience.
I have to say, the Sertao looks like a great choice for such a trip.
