    I'm planning on the bike hitting the ground multiple times - on sand, mud, dirt, rocks, trees, etc. I'm going to look at aluminum panniers and a dry bag for the back.

    And upon further review, not quite. The Transalp was sold here in the US for two years, '89 and '90. Some '90 models were available as NOS as late as '94. The Africa Twin, while related to the Transalp is not exactly the same, but some parts are interchangeable, and some people have built hybrids:
