However, the authorities can't prove that he was the one who was actually riding it. What they CAN do, though, is give the owner about $1,500 in fines and confiscate the bike, permanently. Apparently there's a law here in BC that makes the owner of a vehicle responsible for its use, regardless of who is driving it.

Another lesson learned by way of the last issue of Motorcyclst - you can have your bike confiscated if you are caught doing more than 45 kph over the limit in BC. Did not know that! The last time I took a road trip through BC (and the roads were empty in early September) I think I broke that barrier, um, pretty well, um, more than once? Not sure, but since I didn't get stopped, it obviously never happened.
